ABOUT ME

Our world is made by plants

Plants are essential for every aspect of our human lives, and they hold the keys to the complex problems that humanity is facing.

Every breath we take was made by plants, every drop of clean water was created by plants. Plants provide material for our clothes and buildings, they give us food and medicine. Plants even have a direct influence on our moods and behaviours through our diets. The molecules in our brain, such as dopamine and serotonin, are plant compounds. Join me and learn about ethnobotany, the relationship between people and plants.

Did you know that 80% of biodiversity on earth can Did you know that 80% of biodiversity on earth can be found in indigenous territories? Indigenous land accounts for only over 25% of land surface worldwide - although much of it is not recognised. This indicates that indigenous cultures are often the most effective stewards of the living environment. The traditional knowledge of thousands of indigenous cultures is key to regeneration and a thriving future for all.

Introducing one of my favourite plants, vetiver gr Introducing one of my favourite plants, vetiver grass. Just its deep, earthy odour is enough to fall in love. However this plant has many more qualities, and is used extensively to prevent soil erosion, for removing pollution from the soil, and for making all sorts of handicrafts, as well as
medicinally.

Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides)

Vetiver is a perennial grass native to India, that was transported around the world more than a century ago. Chrysopogon originates from Pogon, Greek for beard, and Chrysos, Greek for gold. Golden beard refers to the
golden hairs at the base of the groups of spikelets. The epithet zizanioides means “by the riverside” referring to the original native habitat of this plant. The name vetiver originates from India, in Tamil ‘ver’ means root and vettiveru means ‘root that is dug up’.

Vetiver was originally used in India to prevent erosion of the mountain slopes, due to its deep and fibrous roots. In India, the roots have been used for handicrafts such as mats, hand fans, hats and baskets, food and   medicine.

Vetiver essential oil is highly valued, with a deep, sweet, woody, smoky, earthy, amber and balsam odour. In aromatherapy, it is used to relieve stress, anxiety, and insomnia, for grounding and contact with the earth. Vetiver essential oil is actually one of the most complex essential oils known. Until now, 300 molecules have been reported!
