Discover ethnobotany, which looks at the relationship between plants, people and culture. Ethnobotany helps us understand the role of plants in food, medicine, clothing, but also mythology and meaning making. In ethnobotany there is a focus on Traditional Knowledge, the knowledge held by Indigenous People and local communities worldwide, which holds the keys to sustainable lifestyles and human flourishing.
In this interactive workshop we will focus on medicinal plants. Medicinal plants are essential medicine for the vast majority of people on earth, and they are foundational to a significant number of pharmaceutical drugs and everyday health and wellness products. Globally, the use of traditional medicine is growing. At the same time, we are losing biodiversity as well as precious Traditional Knowledge at unprecedented rates, as they are impacted by the same forces.
We will touch upon these global forces and how to protect medicinal plants and the communities who care for them. And, we will co-create a community map so we can understand our own local medicine resources. Where do we find our plant medicines, and where do we acquire our knowledge?

I am an ethnobotanist and designer, fascinated by the relationship between people and plants. Taking a long pause from my career in digital design I left to travel in Latin America for 10 months. After this time of deep reflection and reconnection with the natural world I returned to university to pursue a MSc Ethnobotany at the University of Kent. My thesis investigated the medicinal plant piripiri (Cyperus spp.) and their significance for the indigenous Shipibo-Konibo in the Peruvian Amazon. I have since been offering online courses, workshops and talks on ethnobotany. My current research focus is the medicinal and spiritual plants of the Sakalava tribe in Madagascar.
