Traditional knowledge in ecosystem restoration

Learn why and how to include traditional ecological knowledge in your ecosystem restoration project.

If you are interested in ecosystem restoration as a student, researcher or practitioner, then this online workshop is for you! Learn about; the value of traditional ecological knowledge in ecosystem restoration, the study and practice of ethnobotany, and three research methods which you can directly apply to your ecosystem restoration project.

Traditional ecological knowledge is the knowledge, practice, and belief held by people in local and indigenous communities who rely on local resources. This knowledge concerns the relationship of living beings to one another and to the living environment. Traditional ecological knowledge is of great value in the design, execution and monitoring of ecological restoration projects, however, it is often not included!

Traditional ecological knowledge provides value when:

  • Constructing historical reference ecosystems
  • Understanding what native species to select for the restoration site
  • Documenting and reviving traditional land management techniques
  • Identifying traditional local food plants, their preparation methods and recipes
  • Identifying traditional local medicine plants, their preparation and uses

This online workshop is in the making. Register your interest now, and you will receive an early bird discount when the session launches!

What we will cover in this workshop

In this online workshop we will learn about:

  • The potential value of traditional knowledge in ecosystem restoration
  • Examples from ecosystem restoration use cases worldwide
  • The study of ethnobotany and the importance of ethics in research
  • Interview techniques: listening to knowledge holders
  • The free listing method: uncovering culturally important plants
  • Plant specimen identification: which plant is being referred to
  • Resources: the best databases for botanical research

Ecosystem restoration is mostly an ecological practice, but what is needed is a restoration of the relationship between people and nature. Including traditional ecological knowledge can contribute to social and cultural restoration.

“…reconnecting people and the landscape is as essential as reestablishing proper hydrology or cleaning up contaminants. It is medicine for the earth.”
